Burley was a product of Ipswich's famous youth set-up and made his debut against Manchester United - marking George Best!

He resigned as Colchester manager on Christmas Eve 1994 before taking charge at Ipswich.

In August 2001, Burley tried to sign the Rams keeper Mart Poom but his offer was turned down by Jim Smith.

Mmmm...Burley in 1974
Injury forced him to miss arguably Ipswich's finest hour - their 1981 UEFA Cup final triumph against AZ Alkmaar.

Burley's favoured system is 4-4-2 and his philosophy is to keep things simple.

Richard Wright, now at Everton, is the player who Burley rates as the most talented he has coached.

Under Burley, Ipswich finished at the top of the divisional scoring charts in 1995/6.

There was speculation in October 2002 that Burley would take the reigns at Stoke City - but he turned down the job and it went to Tony Pulis instead.

When Ipswich were relegated from the Premiership last season, Burley accepted a 50 per cent pay cut - and he feels players should do the same.

We reckon he looks a lot like the Estonian decathlete Erik Nool (See left). Maybe that accounts for his enthusiasm for Estonian goalkeeper Mart Poom.

He's good friends with the former Scotland manager Craig Brown, currently in charge at Preston North End.

He counts beating Arsenal in the 1978 FA Cup final as his favourite moment as a player.

He believes that national teams should always be managed by someone of the same nationality - and says he would never take the job of England manager.

Burley was born on June 3rd 1956 which makes him a Gemini. A quick look at the Big Book of Horoscopes reveals that Geminis 'have a good attitude to money.' Good job really!

Burley is the sixth man to take charge at Derby County in the past 18 months. Here's hoping it's a successful appointment...
