Couldnt get over how small the ground actually was in the flesh for one that seemed so big on TV. How did we get 8000 fans onto that terrace on the opening day in 1988/89.
Truly charismatic dump of a ground the like of which I miss visiting terribly
ryan, Monterrey Mex
I loved the stadium. im glad its destroyed though
Pete, Derby
Im in deep regret that i only went to the baseball ground wen i woz 5-11 and cant remember much of it but love to hear stories of the atmosphere generated at the small but electiric place they called the baseball ground and love to hear the stories and legends of the pop-side. Wish i had experienced them. But love the east stand at our new stadium. Cumon u rams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jim,borrowash
I can always remember my first game at the bbg it was alan hintons testimonial match and my dad took me,from then on i was hooked and spent the best part of my teen years with my mates cheering on the mighty rams standing in the pop side..happy times and memories.I can always remember a particular mid week night match against liverpool when micheal forsyth scored 1-1 and we were packed into the pop side like sardines and the atmosphere was electric...R.I.P BBG AND THANKS FOR THE HAPPY MEMORIES.
Dave , Liverpool
Such a shame as yet another football ground is bulldozed into history!! sad to see old stadiums such like the Dell, Filbert Street, Roker Park, Maine Road dissapeer! Im a Liverpool fan myself and will have to come to terms with Anfield being knocked down for some plastic, no atmospheric stadium which doesnt have a patch on any of the old ones!! I remember watching the 1996/1997 season were Derby vs Coventry F.A Cup game at baseball ground live on Sky as Dean Sturridge claimed the winner and jumped into the crowd!! fantastic memeroies even tho im a Pool fan!
R.I.P BBG!
john from Burton
Quite sad seeing these pictures , lots of great memories but it's progress Pride Park is such a great stadium.
mark-rotherham
shame really but progress is progress! been to many great occasions at the BBG in my home-town lets home that Pride park can give us the same for the future!
Frank Davey,Perth.W.Australia
I'll never forget Cloughie and his(our) incredible team beating Spurs 8-2. What a fantastic game. It was a magic feeling being one of the nearly 42,000 crowd that day. All best wishes for the RAMS at Pride Park.
Adam, Derby
Although i am young Iam sure that The BBG is one of the greatest stadiums ever. C'mon You Rams get back to your old selves
adam allestree
the bbg got me in to football and derby it a feeling id never experinced before, p park is good but will never live up to the bbg! boohoo
richard barker
i played here for under 15's school football association and it was magnificent the atmosphere was fantastic and it still had style and class pitty they was grass growing in the stands.
John Ashton, Melbourne Australia
I have been a fan of the Rams since 1949 when taken to watch the Rams play Sunderland. Living abroad makes the Rams more important to one as they epitomise what we miss about Derby.
Although I am nostalgic about the Baseball Ground I realize that we must look ahead and give our grandchildren happy memories they discuss in years to come.
Best wishes to the Rams and their supporters for the future!
Phil Gilman, Germany
I started watching the Rams in 1959. BBG always had a great atmosphere. Those European days. Oh what memories. RIP BBG
Trevor Parry. ILKESTON
Just looked at the photos of the BBG, and must admit to getting a bit choked up. Lots of happy memories, 2 Div 1 Championships, beating Benfica 3 - 0 and Arsenal 5 - 0. Whilst I have got used to Pride Park, for me the atmosphere will never match the one we had at BBG
john. derby
reading these comments with a lump in my throat, can recall the tingles down my back the first time i stood on the popside, what great memories
R.I.P B.B.G
Chris, Derby
RIP the BBG, i know im biased but you wouldn't find a better atmosphere anywhere in the world. I remember standing on a crate at the front of the popside or behind the goal at the Normanton end. Midweek games were the best! Too many memorable games to pick one out. Thanks for the memories!
Andy Gaucher, Ambergate
First match my dad took me to was the Alan Hinton testimonial in the 70's - saw some fantastic games over the years (7-0 win against Lincoln in Div3) - I will miss the place, I've been to Pride Park 4 times and it doesn't come close to the BBG for atmosphere - may it rest in pieces.
Jason Bannister, Reading
1st game vs Spurs 1976 Aged 10. Result Derby 8 Spurs 2. Saw some great p[layers: McFarland, Todd, Gemmill, George etc After 400 games or so, I still haven't been to Pride Park - I can't believe it'll have anything like the same atmosphere as the old 'Basketball Ground' as I used to call it.
Howard, Newthorpe.
Me thinks Pride Park needs some mud, some pipe smoke and a POPSIDE! RIP BBG!
Danny, London
Ow well i never went there but it's gone now so get over it and be proud of PRIDE PARK it's the only good thing going for us at the moment. And I's only 7 years old and it's got happy memories already. Dont every one forget how nice Pride Park is.
Owen Frasier U S A
As Kids we would walk from Alvaston in about 1958 and pay afew pennies to go into the boys enclosure. That was before Cloughie .Then it was all out excitement week after week ,The best time of my life will I never forget it or Baseball Ground
steve sallis
Match day will never be the same.The pub,the streets,the terraces,the singing,the celebrating,the mud,the smell,ground at 1.30,the crush....v Chelsea 68/69,vSpurs69/70vforestR.I.P
Sue, Derby
I look every day to se the floodlights on Derbys skyline it will be a sad day when they are no longer there. Pride park will never have the same 'presence'in derby as the BBG had.
Ray (Popside forever)
Goodbye to the Baseball Ground, So many (happy) memories.
Piv Samra
Does anybody know if its still possible to buy any seats or other bits and bobs from the BBG. Or know of anyone selling them
Michelle Swadlincote
It will be sadly missed by everyone in Derby. The best and most memorable game I went to was the Crystal Palace game, when van der laan got us into the Premiership.
Andrew Warwick, Derby
I begged my Dad to take me for years, although my first game at the BBG was in the mid-80's, we were playing West Ham, I must have been about 11. Ill never forget the experience..got carried over a turnstile in the vulcan end for 50p! I think Cally scored and the place went balastic! fantastic day! was addicted to the club and place since then! we'll never forget the BBG! R.I.P
Gerry, Ireland
As a Rams fan living in Ireland, my earliest memories of the BBG consist in listening to the famous ROAR on BBC Radio 2 commentaries in the late 60's and early 70's. Later progressed to watching the great European Wednesday nights of the 70's on the BBC. Finally got to visit in the early 80's and have made at least 3 annual visits ever since. Despite witnessing many great games and momentous events, some of my own fondest memories are of visiting the empty ground and spending time strollng around or seated in one of the stands just savouring the ghosts of players and fans from times past. Not sure if Steve Bloomer is really watching over Pride Park but himself and his mates will never disappear from Shaftsbury Crescent. I'm feeling sad all of a sudden as I write this. Thanks for the memories!
David , Hucknall
It's sad to see the end of an era. The council need to remember the history when naming the streets. Popside Road , Clouhgh Road ,Carter Road ,Hector Way , etc. Afterall there are plenty of legends to choose from.
GRAHAM- CHESTERFIELD
I AM VERY SAD TO SEE THE BBG IN THIS STATE. I WENT TO MY FIRST MATCH THERE AT AGE 4 WITH MY DAD.MY FIRST SEASON TICKET COST £12.00 IN THE KIDS PEN, BUT THE STEWARD ON THE A STAND USED TO LET ME SIT NEXT TO MY DAD, SNEAKING ME IN FOR
10 PLAYERS No 6 CIGGIES. I WAS THERE WHEN WE GOT PROMOTION FROM DIV3 AND THEN INTO THE 1ST UNDER ARTHUR COX, WHAT FANTASTIC OCCASIONS. WE WILL ALL MISS YOU BASEBALL GROUND. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.
Mike (Nuneaton)
Great atmosphere - I shall never forget the rich smell of pipe smoke on a Saturday afternoon at the BBG in the 70's, and the great fans at the Normanton end. Always ready to talk to you and give an opinion.
The best match I saw - November 1975 v Leeds Utd, coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with a great goal in the 88th minute from Roger Davies at the Ossie end (that was the Franny Lee Norman Hunter punch up game as well).
What a ground, what fantastic fond memories that will live with me forever.....it just makes me so sad to see these latest pictures. They can kill the ground, but they can't take away what we all had there.
Laura
aww so sad to see the bbg gone. went there about a month ago, and got some bricks and photos, had tears rolling down my face. love the place, no where will ever replace the atmosphere, and that ground is a legend. everyone loved it there. first went with my dad when i was 5, i remember my dad telling me to remember this day for the rest of my life, i had a season ticket from 1981 right up until the last season. when the final whistle was blown for the very last time i can remeber standing there and bursting into tears, a very very very sad day for all derby supporters, young and old. bbg was amazing, and i have great memories of the place, only wish the new ground had an atmosphere like it and the team would play as well as they did in the bbg.
up the rams, long live the rams!
Chris Salmon, South Normanton
Only became a fan in 1994 at the age of 23 but have a few great memories of the Baseball Ground. I turned up one drizzly afternoon and watched the most awful game finish 1-1. It was terrible but from then on I was hooked and all because of the fabulous atmosphere and the great supporters. You can keep your Old Traffords and your Russians and your stock market. The BBG was where the proper football was. And there was a cracking little chip shop around the corner (no, not the City Ground!).
Leon Sokulsky Australia
Born and bred in Derby came back for a visit in 1996 and was lucky enough to see Derby v Man Utd 1-1.It was the highlight of my trip. Never forget the atmosphere of the old Baseball Ground.Pure Magic!
Dave, Eastbourne
Brilliant atmosphere and all that mud. Some say worth ten points a season. How we could do with some of those now. Cant see the "Pride" or the passion in this team at the new place. Sad goodbye to the BBG.
David Zydzienowski, Dubai
The first time I went to see a match at the BBG was in January 1962 when I was 9 years old & I went with my brother who was 7,by ourselves, having travelled on two buses from Breadsall. From that time onwards I have been a Rams fan and wherever my travels around the world have taken me I have always looked for Derby's result. The BBG holds many, many memories of great games, players and the people who supported the team. One of my best memories was the night we won promotion from Div.3 and I wasn't there. I was in Saudi Arabia and and it was my birthday (9th May) and I telephone my brother who put the receiver to the radio as I listened to BBC Radio Derby for the final 15 minutes. It cost me nearly £40 in charges but what a night we had celebrating!!!
John Stenson road
My best memory is of Dean Suanders goal against QPR he beat paul parker to the ball ran down the pitch and scored a great goal he was a great player now we could do with a player like Deano
Booey, California USA
What a ground! What memories! My most memorable games were when we beat Forest 4-1! in 1979 and 2-0 in 1983. So long BBG thanks for the great games & wonderful atmosphere.
NICK ALLGOOD, Derby
Sad to see the BBG finally being pulled down. Many cold Saturday afternoon stood on the Popside as a young fan are distant, fond memories.
A pity to see this once great stadium finally crumble and lie in ruins. Such irony that the club itself seems to be heading the same way.
kev chatterley
so many memories of the popside on a cold saturday afternoon happy days may the baseball ground rest in peace but long live the rams
pete saundersfoot pembrokeshire
BBG no Ground like it, being a kid of 8 or 9 (1970ish) waiting for the stewards opening the gates at half time and letting us kids in. Great
days right up to the last agianst arsenal.
Matt Letchford, West Hallam.
So many have said that no ground had an atmosphere quite like the old Bseball Ground, one love! Gone but never to be forgotten. Up the rams!
Ian Taylor, Derby
RIP bbg, so many memories - 4-1 against Real Madrid, Robbie van der Laan vs Palace. Sad to see the old girl now. They can erase the buildings but never the memories.
Laura D. Nottinghamshire
ONE LOVE for the baseball groud
love the place, will never forget it
we will miss it, the memories are with us for ever but its sad to see it go
r.i.p bbg, u will always be in our hearts
Jarrod Sellers
So sad to see the demise and neglect of such a huge part of The Rams history, all the more frustrating the area is full of people who dont understand its legacy, every time i pass the Baseball Ground it will always bring a tear to my eye, even if it stands no more. But one thing that will always stand are its glorious memorys down the years. We will love you forever BBG X
Roger Tatman
Many eventful years from 1952 until 1973,from 3rd div North to league champions, all watched from the "popside".Wonderful memories, great family atmosphere.
steve dolman glasgow
Great days, great nights. Spurs 5-0, Benfica 3-0, Liverpool 1-0 (Steve Powell!)Real Madrid 4-1, Liverpool 4-0. The noise, the smells, the amphitheatre. It will never be replaced, it will never be forgotten.
Derek Bentley, Costa del Sol
Boxing Day 1945(or six.) 11yrs old. Being helped over the turnstyle at Colombo street end. Every other gate shut,it was 3pm. Come on son, get on my shoulder, we“ll get you down to the front, and they did. I saw close up, my hero H.S.Carter and the first player to sign my new autograph book., P.D.Doherty. The opposition was Spurs and we beat them again as we always did in those days( and Arsenal and Chelsea too.)Great team, great ground, great atmosphere then. Sleep well old girl, may the turf lie lightly over you.
Brian Leicester
Many happy memories of the BBG from when I lived in my hometown, but the greatest has to be when the record crowd was set against Spurs. Dave MacKay led the newly promoted Rams to a fantastic 5-0 victory against his old club. I was so crammed in on the popside I could only see 2 thirds of the pitch, luckily it included the end where all the goals were scored.
ian edwards, portugal
I am back visiting in Derby at the moment and drove past the old ground only on Sunday (16th Nov) - with almost 40 years of memories it all looked so sad. But at least the memories are there. My Portuguse friends all remember the famous Benfica night even now and all of them speak fondly of the club - at least the club is still there
Damian McDermott,Chaddesden
I shall remember the game, before we got promoted (watford) of the atmosphere and crowd noise. The BBG lived up to its full potential of being a great small ground. RIP THE BBG.
Adie,Derby
Endless memories of the old place, but standing on the popside on a cold February evening seeing the Tinman go down in front of us, it looked bad but he slowly gets up dusts himself down and gives the popside a wink and a thumbs up...class.
rest in peace old gal
paul walker, derby
I really do miss the BBG, standing on the popside, cheering on the rams. That stadium, and the popside in particular, had an awesome, unique atmosphere that no other ground i have ever visited can match. We should never have moved. the baseball ground was pure fun, something that modern grounds lack. They seem sterile in comparison.
Mark Newton (Boot)
Although I'm now living in Sydney Australia (since 1990), as a season ticket holder for the best part of 20 years; I have very fond memories of the BBG. Right from when I was old enough to go with mates into the Kids Corner, then over the years in the Popside, then moving to the "C" Stand. Littleover Rams where are you now? Even now after every game I get on the internet and or ring friends who are still in Derby and go to games. Right now I'm in San Diego California and at the gym today I was weaaring my latest Rams shirt!
sean flynn brazil
loved the weds night games euro nights great times will miss you alot bbg oh why did we have to move.
M.Baldino .North London
i can still remember sneeking into the baseball ground as a kid with my friends on a saturday afternoon , cant believe they couldnt have stayed there, the atmosphere was the best in country , and most players who played they will tell you!!!!!very sad loss to the great people of Derbyshire
Richard Ware, Oxford
With no 'pride' it seems at our current home, oh how I long for those Wednesday evening games when you pushed your way on to the popside to see the ground all lit up and the noise of what sounded like 50,000 supporters booming down from 4 old stands that regularly only really held 15,000! Will miss the 'old girl'
Kieran,Midway
I'm a staunch Liverpool fan although I'd regularly go to the BBG in the late 1980's/early 1990's with my dad. So many happy memories for me. I went for a last look and to get some photo's in May with my Dad. Also came away with a sign and a few bricks!!!!So long to another irreplaceable piece of British football.
Pete Bilbie, Etwall
We should never have moved.
Thanks for the fantastic memories BBG, Rest in Peace you'll never be forgotten.
john spencer. mansfield
some fantastic years at the famous old ground. makes u want to cry. we will never replace the atmosphere that it created especially on night matches. we will all miss the bbg.
