The
Keys might not be the most inspiring name, but this trio are making
some of the most awe-inspiring music around.
They're also coming to Derby soon...
Simon
Cowell and Pete Waterman would have a fit if they were ever asked
to manage The Keys.
Simon would moan that the guys 'just aren't good-looking enough' whilst
Pete would blow his top about their annoying habit of writing their
own songs.
EIGHT
GREAT BANDS YOU CAN HEAR IN THE KEYS
1.
The Coral
2. Belle and Sebastian
3. Beach Boys
4. The Beatles
5. Stone Roses
6. Super Furry Animals
7. The Music
8. Pixies
Which
is all a bit of a roundabout way of saying that this new band from
Wales exist on a musical plain so high above the likes of Gareth Gates
and Michelle McManus that it's untrue.
Their music fuses together so many different influences that every
song has its own sound and no two tracks on their magnificent debut
album sound alike - the only thing they tend to have in common is
that they pay homage to some of the best bands of all time (see list
of influences in panel).
Featuring Matthew Evans on vocals, Gwion Rowlands on guitar and Sion
Glyn on bass (so who's playing drums?!), the band are an evolution
of Murry The Hump, another awfully-named group who were once given
Single of the Week by NME.
The Keys' eponymous first album was released last year on Too Pure
records and includes the singles 'Strength of Strings', 'Gurl Next
Door' and 'Love Your Sons and Daughters', the latter being a particularly
dreamy slab of lo-fi psychedelia.
Now the band are touring the album plus some new material and they
arrive at The Victoria Inn on Wednesday, 17th March. Needless to say,
we recommend you take a look!
