The Stylistics
Stylistics
Betcha by golly wow!
You'll be sure to recognise their songs but now you have the chance to actually see The Stylistics.

It's not often you can wander into Derby City Centre and see one of the greatest and most influential soul bands ever.

The Stylistics are:
Russell Thompkins Jnr.
Airrion Love
James Smith
Herbie Murrell
James Dunn

But on Sunday 2nd November the Assembly Rooms welcomes you to an evening with The Stylistics.

Even if the name doesn't mean much to you, the hits will.

The Philadelphia five contributed towards that famous Philly vibe with hits including Betcha By Golly Wow, You Make Me Feel Brand New and I'm Stone in Love With You.

Along with The O'Jays, The Spinners and the Temptations, The Stylistics were the pioneers of sweet, harmonious ballads. The soaring falsetto of Russell Thompkins Jr. combined with lush, yet graceful production gave the group a unique and glorious sound. And during the early '70s, the band had 12 straight top ten hits.

More recently you'll recognise the tunes courtesy of artists who have dared to cover them, it's hard to hit those high notes. Prince tackled Betcha By Golly Wow admirably in 1996 and more recently the ginger crooner, Mick Hucknall, churned out a strangulated version of You Make me Feel Brand New. We reckon it won't be long before Blue or Westlife catch on and record a cover of 'I'm Stone in Love with You'.

These days the Stylistics are Airrion Love, Herbert Murrell, Van Fields and Harold Brown who has replaced Russell Thompkins Jr.

Dig out your tight flares, practice your sway and sing along in your sweetest voice.

The Stylistics appear at the Derby Assembly Rooms on Sunday 2nd November at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £16.50, £14.50.
