Flashback: with the BBC Bus

Sudbury
Parade of the Queens
It's time for a peek back at Sudbury.

These pictures aren't quite as old as they first appear though.

Find out why Sudbury's in a timewarp.
A look back at Sudbury.

• A few facts about Sudbury

Sudbury is situated in the lower Dove valley. It's a former estate village and earned its crust mainly as a farming community. The village was dominated for hundreds of years by its relationship with the Vernon family of Sudbury Hall.

The hall is an early 17th century house with beautifully restored interiors, including woodcarvings and a richly decorated staircase.

Sudbury is equally popular for the Museum of Childhood. Where else can you actually have a go at being a chimney sweep by climbing a purpose built chimney? Sure does make you feel claustrophobic!

Audrey Hitchmough leapt on board the BBC Bus when they visited Sudbury and brought with her a selection of photos of Sudbury through the ages.

Ladies and their families in the village dressed up for a pageant of Queens.

The WI wrote a play and performed it during the day. Afterwards they were all photographed outside the hall.

The ladies made all of the costumes and everyone chipped in to help out.

This was to celebrate the opening of the bypass. Various road users used different modes of transport to test out the new road.

All the villagers dressed up in Victorian costume.

There were stage coaches, penny farthing bikes and the odd bone shaker too.

As you can see it caused some interest as the villagers crowded around to see the pomp, ceremony and the nattily dressed riders.

This photo was taken on the main road outside the Vernon Arms.

Remember Audrey outside Sudbury Hall in 1952? Well here she is again with her granddaughter Rosie.

The photo was taken on the 100th birthday of the National Trust. Anyone who was 100 that year was invited to the Hall to take part in the celebrations.
