Flashback: with the BBC Bus

Heanor
Fisher guys
Joe Henson's been a keen fisherman since he was a little boy.

Here he shares some of his memories with us...
Looks like they've caught summat! But what exactly?
• Heanor

The Ripley and District Angling Club has been going for over 100 years. Joe Henson joined when he was a wee lad. He's 94 now and is still a member.

Joe jumped on board the BBC Bus and brought us a few photos of the club and some others that remind him of past times.

• Joe's pictures

Check out how popular fishing was in the 1890s!

This is a picture of the Ripley and District Fishing club taken outside The Anchor Inn.

A common sight for the guys fishing down on Butterly reservoir.

This is the Margaret Rose locomotive pulling the Pulman passenger train from The Midland Railway.

I remember fishing Butterly and the car stacker at the side of the old A38. It was agood venue30+years ago.Tight lines

what fish exactly did he catch and wat is his biggist fish

When I was a young lad, Butterly Embankment was a sun-trap in the summer, which drew many a young angler to fish the cool deep waters for perch. Handsome, brightly coloured fighters, they seemed to throw themselves on a bunch of maggots presented on a gilt hook. I used to marvel at the sight of the vertical car-stacking device across the road, in the Butterly works yard. Happy days!
