Blackwell
Blackwell is a village in the upper Erewash valley where coalmining has taken place since medieval times.

The meaning of Blackwell is attributed to a ‘Dark Spring’ and is thought to be the spring on the hill known as ‘Sinai’ opposite the church. It is thought that the coal deposits coloured the water to give it its dark appearance.

Steve Harris
The following pictures are various team photos of the Blackwell Miners Welfare Football Club. Steve Harris, who is the General Secretary of the club is Blackwell born and bred. His wife, Julie, is from Westhouses down the road and her family and friends feature in some of the photographs.

Proudly boasting two trophies, the team poses for a picture in 1949. Julie's uncle is third from the left in the back row and was the team captain. The man third from the left on the bottom row is called Harry Hill! What are the chances of that happening!

Smart white shirts in this line-up from the 1954/55 season. The team were the Notts Alliance Champions and Senior Cup runners-up that season.

And this is the team as they look this season - far removed from the long shorts and stiff collars of the 1940s and 1950s.
