Abseiling
on the Miller's Dale viaduct

This
is a walk which is great at any time of year - superb for spring flowers,
summer shade, autumnal hues or winter starkness.
It takes you through the popular Miller's Dale area of Derbyshire. |

Miller's
Dale |
I love
this walk and probably do one variation of it two or three times a
month.
What is more, this is a walk whose length can be easily varied by
taking some of the shortcuts.
By keeping to the former railway line it is also great for wheelchairs,
pushchairs, and bikes (a great way to get reluctant young children
out!)

Easy
- suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs |
Starting
Point: Miller's Dale Station.
Grid reference: SK138 733
Time: Approx 1.5 hours (gently)
Distance: 2.5 kilometres
Transport: Miller's Dale is accessible by bus from Tideswell
and Buxton. Parking is available at the Station.
Refreshments: The Wiggly Tin Café is nearby and
down in the valley lies the Angler's Rest Pub. Map: Ordnance
Survey White Peak Map. Explorer OL24. |
Make your way onto the main platform. Here the National Park has installed
a small display about the area (and there are loos).

Walk down
the platform, (turn left when facing the station buildings) and follow
the cinder path onto the former track bed.
Continue along this path past the disused lime-kiln (worth a look
from above and below) until you reach the viaduct.
You may be lucky enough to see people abseiling off this (license
needed).
Here there is an option:- either take the steep steps down to the
river side from the nearside of the bridge, or continue over the bridge
and take the path via the five bar gate across the sloping meadow
to the side the river.
Cross the bridge (looking out for trout), turn right and follow the
stream as it runs down towards the railway viaduct. (You can ascend
here and retrace your steps to the start if you wish).
The riverside path continues, however, back to the B6049 in Miller's
Dale.
Here, the short, steep, stepped path will take you back to the car
park, or the quick route to the café is via the side road.
A short walk along the main road (past the craft supplies shop) will
bring you to the Angler's Rest.
We'd
like you to
tell us about your favourite walk
in Derbyshire or the Peak District.
Send us as much information as you can, plus a few details such
as approximate length, duration, starting point and grid reference
and we'll add your walk to our list.
You
might like to tell us why you enjoy the walk, too.
