Markeaton
Park is the most used leisure facility in the city and is popular
with children, adults and families. Located on the west side of the
city, it is easily accessible from the A38 and the A52. |
 |
Markeaton
Park has a variety of facilities for visitors, including a golf course,
pitch and putt, boating lake, fishing, children's lake, karting, crazy
golf, the Mundy Play Centre, craft village and much more.
A miniature railway is one of the more recent additions to Markeaton
Park.

Opened
in 1996, the ‘Markeaton Lady’ now carries visitors around the park
at weekends, Bank Holidays and during school holidays.
In
the summer months she sometimes carries over 1,000 passengers a day.
The track - at 15 inches - is less than half the width of a proper
railway line and the engine itself is based upon a Welsh Slate Quarry
Engine in service in Britain earlier this century.
Perhaps less well known is the fact that Markeaton Park is also home
to the City Council’s Nursery, which produces almost half a million
bedding plants each year for use around the City.
Although it is generally closed to the public, its doors do open once
a year to allow the public a glimpse behind the scenes.
Markeaton Park is probably the City’s most popular Park with children.

It boasts
a vast array of attractions, from the paddling pool which is buzzing
in summer to a pitch and putt course, canoeing, slides and swings
and much more that form part of the modern Mundy Play Centre
Markeaton Park is also the venue for many different events throughout
the year, such as the annual motor and fire engine shows.
A two-day Eco Fest was held there earlier this year, and the firework
display at Markeaton Park each Bonfire Night always attracts good
crowds.
