Haunted Derby
The Dolphin Inn
Haunted?: The Dolphin Inn
tiny Derby really does have a reputation for being a hot bed of ghostly goings-on.

Is it the ghost capital of the UK?
tiny
A terrace house complete with spirit lodger, floating trousers and the notorious Derby Gaol, which has housed much more than your average prisoner, - it’s no wonder Derby has been named the ghost capital of England.

With over 1,000 paranormal sightings, is this simply just a case of over active imaginations, or do things really go bump in the night in the city of Derby?

Stories of ghostly activities span generations. In fact it’s difficult to turn a corner in the city without hearing a nerve jangling tale of things going bump in the night. And you don’t have to go too far to find one such tale.

Built over 500 years ago, the Dolphin pub, claims to have more spirits than the ones found behind the bar. This Tudor building from 1532 and boasts no less than four resident ghosts as its regulars.

The nearby Bell Inn and Lafferty's (formerly the George Inn) also claim ghosts.

Not all of Derby’s hauntings however are confined to historical residences.

Jenny Richard’s terrace house on the outskirts of Derby may by lacking the typical attributes of your average haunted dwelling, no gnarled tree in the garden and not a creepy butler in sight, but don’t let this fool you.

On the night Jenny moved in, she was prodded in the back by what she later believed to be the ghost of an old man. Jenny’s son has seen him too down the alley at the back of the house.

On closer inspection the figure vanished.
Over two thirds of Derby's sightings are in buildings situated alongside the old A6. Some believe that this is due to lay lines, which are thought to convey psychic energy.

Leading ghost researcher Richard Felix has his own theory for Derby’s high spirit population.

Condemned Cell: Derby Gaol
Condemned cell
He explained: "So many things have happened, so many people have passed though, so much energy has been expelled here… We have the last hanging, drawing and quartering in England and the only Peer to be hanged for murder.,"

Derby has been quick to respond to the flocking tourists and would be ghost busters, providing spooky city walks galore.

Derby Gaol on Friar Gate is said to be one of the most haunted in the country, with the condemned cell, the most haunted hot spot there.
The Derwent Paranormal Society claims to have the culprit of the supernatural ailments captured on camera.

Whether your a supernatural sceptic or a supernatural seeker, it can’t be denied that there is definitely something out of the ordinary about Derby.

Annette frol littleover.you asked about the land behind the firestation where Hall Park flats are?? Well myself and 3 friends did a Ouija board there about 19 yrs ago and the sherry glass shot off the board and smashed into pieces on the paving stone. We all legged it in fright but the next day when we went back, the glass was whole but with a long crack down 1 side!!

Me and my mother are convinced our house is haunted, both the dining room and larger back bedroom. The dining room by a middle aged woman who stands in the doorway to the kitchen and we have no idea about the bedroom. We are not positive about the woman but this is what we both 'felt' before we even spoke to each other about it. She doesnt seem malicious or angry, maybe just a little sad. Anyone know where I can find out who has lived here previously?

i agree with derby being most haunted place in britain, where ever you go, you never feel alone, which in a way is nice. I've been on a ghost walk and still have not seen everything but in derby its not a case of having to see it to beleive it, its more that you can feel it, also, has any one expirenced anything at seymours wine bar? my parents used to own it and my mum often smelt lavender strongly and the window cleaner claims he actually saw the ghost of an old lady upstairs. does anyone know anything about the place or why it could be haunted?

could anybody please tell me if there has ever been any reports of a 'ghost train' in derby. My parents both witnessed this in derby around the late seventies whilst in their car and their were other cars present at the time so their must be other witnesses although they didn't realise till the next day that the site had not been used as a rail line for many years and upon returning to the site the next day realised that there was no longer a track running across the road. would be interested to know if their was ever an accident involving a train in derby or if anyone else has witnessed the same thing.

(Rachael - our news team would very much like to talk to you. Could you please drop us a quick email to make contact - send it to derby@bbc.co.uk. Many thanks!)

i believe the house i live in is haunted by as far as i can tell, from what my children say 2 ghosts, they are not violent, they do not leave you with any uncomfortable feelings, just an awareness that they are there, we now live in what i would call harmony with them.

I have had very wonderful experience with the spirits of Elvaston Castle today. Not in a creepy, or stereotypically haunting 'spooky' way though. I was a little surprised when it happened. But I found the feeling of them being there so welcoming.. it felt really good. Im not a very religious person and I do not have any history of mental illness! Too much time is spenty focussing on the negative with regard to spirits. The spirits I encountered today were certainly very positive, even a little playful! Their souls have not passed over for a reason... which I think is not generally to terrify the living. Try not to be affraid of them... easier said than done... (I used to be terrified of all things spiritual!) Some can definately be really pleasant!

I heard thet Fat Cats on Sadler Gate is meant to be haunted ( well, outside). Someone I know Said they saw a horse and carriage going down the road, and a man running after it, waving a crop, as if trying to catch the horse! People say it is because there used to be a stables where Fat Cats is now! More than 1 person has seen this site! Ahh!
