Derby
has much to offer the visitor. It
is both an ancient town and a relatively young city, with a surprising
mixture of old and new architecture to be enjoyed. So take a tour
of the city centre with us now. |

Hello.
My name is Keith Blood. I am a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the county
of Derbyshire based in the city.

Architecturally, Derby has more than 600 ‘listed’ buildings of
historical or architectural importance and boasts more ghosts than
York as our regular Ghost Walks will prove to you.

The Romans
built a fort and settlement on the banks of the river Derwent here,
the Saxons created a borough and minted money and the county’s aristocrats
and gentry created a business centre for the wool and lead trade.
The 18th and 19th centuries saw some of the finest entrepreneurs,
scientists, engineers and statesmen further the wealth and importance
of Derby.
Through time, it has become the home of such great companies as Midland
Railway with its carriage and wagon and locomotive manufacture, Rolls-Royce
with its motor cars and aero engines, Royal Crown Derby porcelain
and, more recently, Toyota.
Our tour starts at the north end of what was once the A6 trunk road
through the city centre and which is now a fine pedestrian shopping
area.
Some of
the photos on this tour have been provided by Derby photographer Andy
Savage. You can see more pictures of Derby and Derbyshire on his site

on TV and Film tour! |
