Kate Hallam from Buxton is hoping to round off a whirlwind year with her first major title.

Kate will be competing against 35 other girls in Bournemouth this weekend to win the Miss England title. She reached the final seven last year and says she's confident she'll do well this year.

Recently, Kate was a grid girl for the Mercedes McLaren formula one team at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The Miss England competition will be a very different affair. The contest involves choreography, making a speech and performing a talent.

But Kate is undaunted: "I'm not nervous at all - I'm a very competitive girl so this time my brain is just focussed on 'going for it'.

"I've done it a couple of times before and obviously I was nervous the first time - but I've learned what to expect and how to perform and I'm really looking forward to it this year.

Kate Hallam talks to BBC Radio Derby's Sally Swinfen.

"I feel I've gained more experience and knowledge. I'm still the same person - I've not changed but I've sharpened up my performance and my talent and I'm just going to do my very best."

Interests: Tennis, keeping fit, watersports, travelling, horse-riding.
Kate was also a keyboard player and singer in a band aged 13-18.
She has raised over £28,000 for good causes.
Kate is no stranger to competition. As well as two previous attempts in the Miss England, she has also been the Derby Rose of Tralee 2003 and, earlier this year, she became The Face of Aintree after winning a Ladies Day competion at the Grand National.

Kate recalls: "I went to Aintree where they were holding a competition - called Ladies Day - they were after the most stylish race-goer and Face of Aintree 2004.

"It was all very last-minute and rushed - I hadn't even bought my hat - I got that on our way down there!

"We had to parade ourselves up and down in front of the judges - just show them what we were about with our style and elegance. Then they told us to go off and that they were going to draw the final five."

Kate made the final five - and went on to win. She won a brand new Jaguar car - but Kate hasn't enjoyed her prize too much yet as she can't drive!

At the age of 17, Kate won a Derbyshire Young High Achievers Award for saving her brother's life. Six years ago her older brother Chris was diagnosed with leukaemia and Kate was found to be an ideal bone marrow donor. Chris went on to make a full recovery.

And Kate has made a fairly impressive recovery of her own.

In 2000 she was rushed to hospital and found to be suffering from Meningitis. She spent three weeks being treated in a Stockport hospital.

If Kate wins the Miss England contest, she'll go on to Miss World later in the year.

I am working in Wroclaw Poland and use the BBC Radio Derby page to keep up to date, I see many beautiful women in Wroclaw, but none compare with Kate, good luck to Kate for the competition, and good luck to the Rams on Saturday against Leeds
