WHAT IT IS

Connecting Derby is the name of the project which will see vast changes to the city's road system over the coming months and years.

There are plans for new junctions, new roads, changes in the direction of traffic flow and additional pedestrian priority.

The plans mean that, eventually, Victoria Street and Albert Street will be closed to through traffic, the Inner Ring Road between Osmaston Road and Uttoxeter New Road will be completed and there will be a new road between St Helen's Street and Lodge Lane.

Derby City Council has promised to keep disruption to a minimum but has warned that there will be significant delays while the work is carried out.

The changes will be made in phases:

Phase One will include the building of a new junction where St Alkmund's Way meets Cathedral Road. It will also see pedestrian priority given to Victoria Street and Albert Street in the city centre.

Phase Two
includes alterations to the Inner Ring Road around the Friar Gate area at its junction with Ford Street and Stafford Street.

Phase Three will involve building the link between Bradshaw Way and Uttoxeter New Road and work on the King Street Link.

A Special Projects Team has been created to deal with this scheme. This team will prepare the detailed designs and will arrange consultation.

Two council officers have been put into the team.

Dave Powner is the Project Manager with overall responsibility for implementing the project. Andy Smart is the Project Co-ordinator, responsible for consultation.
