If Christmas shopping is something you dread we've got a little tip-off that might just put you at the top of everyone's list this year.

Pine vase
Just one example of the work you can look at

Instead of traipsing around the shops being drawn in by the traditional type gifts that really show nothing of your personality why not wow your friends and family a little piece of locally produced art instead?

On Tuesday 3rd December, the studio doors at Banks' Mill in Derby are being thrown open to the public as they celebrate the beginning of the festive season.

As well as the opportunity to browse 35 open studios, meet the artists and bag a few bargains you're being invited to sip mulled wine, talk to the artists about their work and gain a glimpse of the passion of some of Derbyshire's most creative people.

Jewels
There's a jewellery workshop too

Filomena Rodriguez, one of the resident artists told us: "It's a great opportunity to come and see what we're up to. We're all friendly people and more than happy to talk about our work. We're all local too and you never know who you might bump into."

This is an ideal opportunity to find special and unusual Christmas gifts and greeting cards.

Banks' Mill co-ordinator, Lesley Frey, explained: "You needn't leave the Mill out of pocket or out of sorts. Whatever your taste we're sure there'll be something here to suit everyone's fancy and everyone's pocket, from the smallest piece of jewellery to a canvas that will fill your living room wall."

Many examples of affordable original artwork will be for sale. Or you can just wander around the gallery, workshops and studios to see what actually happens inside the austere brick built 19th Century mill.

Although rather foreboding from the outside, within Banks' Mill there is a hive of creative endeavour, the breadth of which is amazing. Potters work next to glassmakers and weavers alongside fashion designers.

Pop along and be inspired. Make sure you don't get branded the most boring present buyer in Derbyshire this Christmas.

What's the most boring Christmas present you've ever recieved? Tell us here.
