Interview: What Makes You Beautiful

Derby five-piece 'What Makes You Beautiful' are getting ready for their biggest gig yet - the Reading and Leeds Festival later this month.

This unique five-piece exploded onto the Derby music scene just over a year a go and have gone from strength to strength, wowing listeners with their exciting 'mad new style'.

Marty (lead vocals/Synth), Liam ‘Cripz’ (MC Vocals), Lewis (Guitar/Backing vocals), Niall (Guitar/Backing vocals) and Duan “started out as group of mates” from the Derby area including Chaddesden, Mickleover and Kilburn, playing for fun.

They have since gone on to bring together all of their many different influences to create a “synthetic opera”, combining everything they like to create a new genre of music.

The group describes their music as containing elements of electronica, grime, pop-punk and nu-rave.

They aim to “make music that people want to party to”. Cripz says: “we write music that we would like to dance to ourselves, so we know that other people would like to dance to it too”.

Earlier this year the band toured the UK with Brokencyde, an electro band from New Mexico, USA. They had “an amazing time” and received a great response on tour. They now want to continue performing at different venues up and down the country.

Last week it was announced that they had been chosen to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at the Reading and Leeds Festival this summer. What Makes You Beautiful are absolutely ecstatic about this news and can’t wait to perform for their biggest audience yet.

One of their favourite songs to perform live is “Can’t Controller” which is all about computer games from their generation. Their newest song is the energetic“Steppin-Up” which the band hope will get people dancing.

Marty says they “want to give Derby something to be proud of” and show there is more musical talent out there than just indie music.

If you want to go along to support the band and check out their unique style their upcoming gigs are:

13th August, at The Vic Inn, Derby
26th August, Festival warm up at The Vic Inn, Derby
28th August, Reading Festival, BBC Introducing Stage
30th August, Leeds Festival, BBC Introducing Stage
