Rams Top Ten: the programme
A special BBC Radio Derby programme remembers Derby County's greatest goals - as voted for by you - as Colin Gibson, Graham Richards and Ross Fletcher take an in-depth look at the top ten.
"It was one of the most amazing individual goals I've ever seen," recalls former commentator Graham Richards.
"I can see him now, setting off. As a commentator you've simply got to be aware of what might happen next.... He got to the penalty area when he released the ball - and I hope my commentary carries the note of incredulity that was the occasion."
He was, of course, talking about Paulo Wanchope's debut strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford in April 1997, voted by Derby County fans as the greatest goal scored in the club's history.
Graham Richards commentated on Wanchope's goal
With the Rams already 1-0 up through Ashley Ward's early effort, the gangly Costa Rican picked up the ball inside his own half and languidly headed goalwards.
All four members of Manchester United's defence attempted to tackle him but Wanchope simply waltzed through them all, looked up and calmly rolled the slotted the ball past a despairing Peter Schmeichal to give the Rams a shock 2-0 lead.
Derby went on to win the game 3-2 and it helped kick-start a fondly remembered period in the club's history which included two top ten Premier League finishes.
BBC Radio Derby sport producer Colin Gibson remembers: "We were sat in the Little Chef on our way to Old Trafford and the talk over breakfast that morning was how Derby were going to avoid being embarrassed by the mighty Manchester United.
"What we didn't know was that Jim Smith was going to give a debut to his new Costa Rican striker Paulo Wanchope and that that debut was going to be remembered forever by all Derby County fans."
But Graham Richards thinks a different goal deserves top rank - Charlie George's goal against Real Madrid in 1975. That goal came second in the fans' vote - third place went to Robbie Van der Laan's promotion-clinching header against Crystal Palace in 1996.
The final totals are listed below.
