Making the Earth Move

25,000 tons - that's the massive amount of earth Jem Hudson aims to move at Stenson Fields.

"Building Foundations for Life" is the banner under which Jem will be marshalling his troops: volunteers determined to create a children's camp on 10 acres of land just two minutes away from Stenson Fields estate.

With work underway this September, the first phase of the project should be completed by mid 2009.

It's an ambitious scheme, with plans to include a Canadian log cabin, sleeping 60 children and their leaders, and with meeting rooms for training sessions.

There'll be a centre for water-based activities, and climbing walls and as many outdoor facilities as they can muster.

They'll need to build 500 metres of road just to access the site! So why is Jem Hudson embarking on such an exhausting venture?

Already a veteran of children's holiday clubs, he'll tell you that a camp like this could benefit thousands of youngsters, and give the,m as the project title suggests, a solid "foundation for life".

A prime mover in Stenson Fields Christian Fellowship, he wants to see Bible teaching incorporated into the mix: "in this day and age people haven't had that background as children".

A persuasive organiser, Jem's already enlisted the help of a local vicar who used to work in quarries, and has got himself JCB trained, with an eye to begging or borrowing one of the famous big diggers.

So, on land that simply served to graze a few horses, a whole new scheme is emerging. A space to watch.
