FaithYou are in: Derby > Faith > 50 years of worship ![]() 50 years of worshipSwadlincote Catholics proved a pioneering bunch. 50 years ago they'd walk to Measham to go to Mass. Then they built their own church:literally. Miners coming off shift laid the foundations in stone. Next year they're celebrating its half-centruy. The Church of St Peter and St Paul on Newhall Road was raised with raw muscle as well as with the money contributed by parishioners determined to have their own place of worship. 2008 sees the 50th anniversary of its consecration, and it'll be a year of services and celebrations. A book's planned for April, a hymn's been commissioned, a mosaic's planned, a beer will be brewed. It's memories, though, that will matter most - and they're being collected and recorded for the occasion. Children from the primary school are lending a hand - and an ear. There may even be a film on the cards. Father Martin Sylvester, who's been Parish priest there for a decade, is keen for anyone who's got tales to tell to get in touch. Modest they might be, but Swadlincote Catholics have a story worth celebrating.
