PresentersYou are in: Derby > BBC Radio Derby > Presenters > The Running of the Nudes ![]() The campaigners The Running of the NudesCampaigners tried to tempt shoppers and passers-by into nudity in the centre of Derby on Thursday as three topless women and a bull took to the streets - all in the name of animal rights! Dressed in horns, red scarves and little else, the three women and their "bull" attempted to sign up Derby residents to take part in a festive, naked run in Pamplona, Spain, in July. The event is called the "Running of the Nudes", which the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Europe (PETA) claim is a humane alternative to the cruel "Running of the Bulls" and the deadly bullfights that follow. The first run took place in 2002 when around a dozen protesters ran naked through Pamplona. Last year, nearly 1,000 runners made international news with their compassionate stand against Spain's reputedly cruel spectacle. One of the women, Lauren Bowey, has taken part in Running of the Nudes. She said: "We've been asking people today to take the issue seriously because it's about cruelty to animals. "A lot of young Brits go to the Running of the Bulls... and the industry is fuelled by tourists - people who go thinking that it's part of Spanish culture and that they should see it and they end up leaving half way though and wishing they hadn't paid out their money to contribute to animal cruelty. "So instead of all of that we're asking people to join us, have an amazing time and join in the Running of the Nudes." Speaking to BBC Radio Derby's Ross Fletcher, Miss Bowey claimed 72% of Spaniards have no interest in bull-fighting and that the anti-bull fighting movement is now huge.
