Galaxy Cinema, Long Eaton, Derbyshire

New life for local cinemas

By Mark Heathcote
Two privately-owned cinemas have opened in Derbyshire in as many months.

The screens are bigger. The buckets of popcorn are bigger. You might imagine that multiplexes have seen off the old-style privately owned film theatres.

But that's not the case - as both the Galaxy in Long Eaton and the Ritz in Belper are demonstrating.

In Long Eaton what was once a burnt out and derelict former bingo hall is now a modern three screen cinema complex, the Galaxy.  Entrepreneur Asif Sahil bought it for £250,000 in 2004 - it opened last week and has 245 seats.

The Ritz in Belper has been open for two months. The building was first used as a cinema in 1919 but, after seeing attendances fall, it closed for the last time in 1991... until now!
