Since its launch in 2003, Donington's Download has become an essential fixture in the festival calendar for fans of rock and metal. Stuart Galbraith is director of Live Nation, the company who own and manage the festival, and he's played a major role in establishing Download as a massively popular summer event. With 23 years experience behind him, 44-year-old Stuart has overseen all of Clear Channel UK's live events this year - including gigs from Madonna, Jack Johnson and The Who - and was recently ranked 16th in The Times Arts Power 100. He said: "I was surprised to be in there at all to be honest. Quite how these things are judged I have no idea. I just get on with what I do - it's probably just someone pulling names out of a hat!" Stuart, who lives in East Staffordshire, started his promoting career at Leeds University's Student Union and attracted the likes of U2, Wham and Simple Minds to play there. This year he'll be involved in more than 1,100 shows and a whopping 3.8 million tickets - but he says it's a job he's enjoying more than ever. He said: "Handling Live 8 was incredible but it's not all about scale. If we've had to work hard to make a gig work, overcome obstacles and beaten off poor sales, that can be incredible too." |
