Putt it there

A weird variation of golf is coming to Derbyshire - but will it make the green in one or end up in the rough?

Crowded House. Koala Bears. Good rugby teams. Yes New Zealand's gifts to the world are few and far between but always very special.

Well now you can add another one to the list. They've only gone and invented a brand new sport - and now it's coming to South Derbyshire.

GolfCross is a strange variation of golf where, instead of aiming to get a round ball into a hole, players have to putt an oval-shaped ball into a pyramid-shaped net.

One man who thinks it'll take off is Simon Hewitt from Dunnsmoor Farm near Hartshorne.

He's in the process of converting an area of the farm into a nine-goal GolfCross course and is hoping sports fans will give it a go.

He said: "I found an advert for it in a farming magazine. It originates from New Zealand and I decided Dunnsmoor Farm would be ideal for it.

"It's a good game for families and children. It's quite a tactical game because you can get the goals to rotate."

Simon's GolfCross course will be one of the first in the country.

He explained: "There's one in Rutland which opened in spring but that's it at the moment. We're quite confident it'll take off - we've got a good customer base in the area and we want to get local schools and communities involved."

Simon is hopeful the course will be completed by next summer.

He said: "We've been through the planning process. We've got two fields grassed down already and one more to go and then we'll start construction on the car park.

"We'll be hoping it'll be completed by late spring next year."
