Mum-of-two designs nightclub of the future

A Derbyshire mother's 'Feng Shui' design has earned her first place in a competition to design a futuristic super-club.

With its egg-shaped toilets and lava-effect floor, Samantha Durbin's nightclub sounds like an amazing place.

But it's not been built - yet. It's the winning entry in a University of Derby competition to design a super-club for the future.

Students on the university's Architectural Venue Design course were handed the brief to design a Singapore venue for the global nightclub giant Ministry of Sound.

And 35-year-old Samantha's entry was picked as the best entry - earning her a work placement at the company's headquarters.

Her design was inspired by the five mythical dragons Feng Shui experts believe have brought Singapore fortune.

It features five distinct zones and includes a jacuzzi, swimming pool, a chill-out room and a glittering VIP area.

And with the company expanding into new territories around the world, there's every chance her designs could become reality.

Samantha, who lives in Derby, said: "I was shocked and delighted to win. I wanted my project to echo some of the history of Singapore and was pleased with the final design.

"Taking part in a work placement for the Ministry of Sound will be a fantastic opportunity."

Michelle Cree and James Beckett were joint runners-up and Georgios Karamarigos came third.

Ministry of Sound's Director of Overseas Operations Neil Morton said: "We chose University of Derby students for this project after seeing last year's ADT Degree Show and having a long working relationship with the course.

"The approach taken by the students shows a professional understanding I have never seen in any previous students' work."
