Ashbourne Shrovetide FootballYou are in: Derby > Places > Ashbourne Shrovetide Football > A Scorer's Tale... ![]() Mark Spencer with his Shrovetide ball A Scorer's Tale...There are few greater honours for Ashburnians than goaling (or scoring) the ball for your side in the Shrovetide football game. Mark Spencer is an Up'ard - and proud of it - and a regular contender in the annual Shrovetide game. He's also extremely proud of the fact that he is one of a select group who own one of the balls - an honour bestowed on anyone who strikes the scoring post three times with the ball. Mark's moment of glory came in 2000 and, in this short video, he tells us all about it. He describes himself as a runner - someone who stands just away from the hug and hopes the ball will come in their direction. Help playing audio/video If it does, it's Mark's job to grab the ball and run like mad to get the ball near his team's goal. It's a job Mark trains for each year. last updated: 31/12/2009 at 17:26 You are in: Derby > Places > Ashbourne Shrovetide Football > A Scorer's Tale... Your complete guide to this ancient game |
