You can't have missed the pictures of a massive rabbit which have been appeared in several newspapers over the past couple of weeks. When the over-sized bunny was mentioned on BBC Radio Derby's Breakfast Show last week, Bob Ault from Derby Rabbit Club immediately got in touch saying his club boasted several rabbits of larger stature. And to prove his point, he brought a 24lb monster to our studios for us all to have a look.
The huge bunny is owned by Ken Gould from East Leake who breeds Continental Giants and it weighs in two pounds heavier than the animal featured in the papers. Mr Gould has around 20 rabbits of similar stature which he sells as pets and for show. He said: "The world record is 26lb and I've kept some in the past which have been up to 25.5lb. "We've got too many to give them all names - although there used to be one we'd take round to see kids which was called Fred."
Continental Giants were originally bred to such a large size to maximum the amount of meat available from each rabbit. Ken says he gave up eating his bunnies around ten years ago - partly due to pressure from his wife. But with a 60ft garage featuring rows of massive rabbits in cages, the temptation to feast on what he and Bob describe as 'one of the nicest meats around' must be enormous. |
