Colin Shaw in his garden

The organic blogger

Suffering a heart attack at 42 convinced Colin Shaw he needed to change his diet. Since then he's been growing his own food and now he keeps a weblog devoted to his organic garden.

A visit to Colin Shaw's weblog reveals that it's set to be a good winter for growing cabbages.

On the down side, however, the mild weather means there are still lots of slugs around!

This online diary is updated nearly every day with the latest news on Colin's organic garden just outside Eyam, over-looking the grounds of Chatsworth House.

It's all part of the healthy lifestyle Colin has subscribed to since suffering a heart attack in 1992 and having a double by-pass operation a year later.

He said: "I decided when I was getting better that I needed to look after myself so I started learning about organic food.

"It's just what my dad used to do anyway - he didn't use any chemicals and that seemed like the right thing to do.

"When you grow food yourself, it's really fresh. And I can't prove that eating organic food is better for my health but it just feels like it is."

Colin's impressive garden features tomatoes, cabbages, leeks, asparagus and a row of fruit cages.

Unfortunately six weeks ago, he suffered another heart attack whilst lifting a heavy solar pod and it was while recuperating in hospital that his weblog came into its own.

Colin explained: "People came on and wished me well. They said they were glad I'd survived.

"I was lying in hospital waiting for treatment and all I could think about was the garden and the blog.

"In a way it kept me sane because the garden is important and thinking about it helped me realise there was life afterwards."
