Monorail for Derby?

Could Derby be one of the first UK cities to get its own monorail system?

A futuristic monorail system could hold the key to solving Derby city centre's congestion problem.

The radical solution is one of several options being considered by Derby City Council as it makes plans for dealing with more traffic in the city centre over the next 15 years.

The council has applied for a £160,000 government grant to look at ways to stop the city becoming gridlocked.

Derby Bus Station
The council wants to get more people onto buses

Martin Repton, the council's cabinet member for planning and transport, says plans have to be drawn up following a five per cent increase in traffic coming into the city centre over the past year.

He said: "In ten years time we're going to see at least a 50 per cent increase and unless we want our cities to become absolutely gridlocked like American cities then we need to do something now.

"The money being spent now is simply to deal with the next four or five years but we need to be look 10-15 years ahead and I'm sure no-one thinks that we should simply tarmac over the city.

"The £160,000 will pay for staff who can look in depth at coming up with solutions for coping with the traffic we know is going to hit us in the coming years."

One of the most eye-catching suggestions for the future is a monorail system, smaller in scale than that used in Bangkok and Sydney but innovative and cheap to maintain.

Cllr Repton said: "The monorail might be something for 15 years time. I'm taking my cabinet members to Cardiff to look at a prototype.

"It wouldn't be a replacement for cars but it would be an alternative that people could use which is environmentally friendly, cost-effective and cheap.

"You'd have one rail running about 10-15ft off the ground. It's a continuous loop to different areas of Derby. It goes at 20mph and there are little pods, each able to hold 4-6 people.

"It's continually moving and uses smart card technology to get one of the pods to come off the loop to pick you up and then rejoin the loop.

"BAA are already involved in it but there are massive hurdles to overcome."

In the shorter term, Cllr Repton and his team are looking at extending increasing schemes to convince people to leave their cars at home when travelling into the city centre.

He said: "We want to look at park-and-ride and using more money for bus routes.

"Car park charges went up about a year ago and part of that money was spent on the Darley Abbey bus service, an improved service to Littleover and another for Chaddesden and Spondon.

"So if we do use some of the money for increasing car parking and the provision of bus services in the city, that might be one aspect."

Despite spending £30m on improvements to the inner ring road over the next three years, Cllr Repton said it's only a short term measure.

He said: "Connecting Derby is for now, the transport innovation fund is for schemes in the next 5-10 years and the monorail is 10-15 years down the line.

"We need to encourage people to look at other forms of transport but for people to do that, it's got to be cheap, clean, safe and available."

Great idea, although, the council should think about re-building our bus station before they get onto fancy transport schemes which'll cost tax payers a lot of money.
Paul Bardill

I think we need to sort out the bus station (riverlights) before we move with this, mind you they are saying in 15 years time and a cost of 160.000 thousand pounds to check it out, erhhhh 160.000 alot of money for some people to check it out.....with derby being a railway city why not do it here and the cost would be half if not nearly nothing to save jobs...but i would prefer a tram link than a monorail...and as so many people are saying derby are so far behind notts leeds and manchester its a wonder how we compete.
sean

Definitely. This will put Derby much more on the map and bring in valued revenue to the city.
David Forman

Yes i think Derby should have a monorail Most city's have trams or something Derby is a great city and it would be good to to have something better
Clare Foster

It qwould be a good idea to get a decent bus station before thinking about some high faluting scheme of monorails.
Joan Gregory

i think that this idea is great because it will be easier to get around mostly for older people. And it will be fun traveling on a monorail and beeing the first to have one.
Laura Yates

No. Certainly, an attractive and reliable form of public transport is needed to link the city centre, rail station bus station , hospitals and car parks but a monorail would be too expensive, environmentally intrusive andboth difficultand expensive to make available for the disabled. In the short term, it is absolutely essential that more priority is given to buses including control of selfish car parking which contributes significantly to buses erratic reliability. Good Luck !
Cliff Fletcher

Sounds a feasible idea should be clean and good for the environment
J>A>Sturges

why not extend the monorail to matlock?, it would be well used and profitable and cheaper than the railway, i wonder if there is anyone out there brave enough to have a go or will politics get in the way, to my mind the monorail could save the people a lot of money and bad air, we should have a monorail sysrem throughout england, but we are back to politics again
phil

yes it will make more tourists come to derby and will solve transport problems
ben burton

I think it is a great idea! a monorail system would be a good and different way to solve Derby's transport problems.
David seaman

What a great idea. A perfect link from the rail station to Eagle Centre car park, then to Assembly Rooms/Market Place. From there to Landau Forte, Joseph Wright and then back through town. Connected to park and ride. Feeling cynical but please be brave and go for it. Let's be 'The City on Top'!
Chris Warwick

A monorail?! Has anyone actually stood back and considered how ridiculous this idea is?! I applaud the fact that the council is adressing the traffic problem in Derby, but it's the same old story. Large amounts of cash paying for staff to 'think up ideas', new bus station to be completed in three whole years, and now a monorail...is it not time for the council to pull their fingers out, get real and actually get pro-active quickly to solve one of the biggest problems in our city?
Chris

I live near Darley Abbey and if i have not left the house by 7.15am to travel by car into town, you can be nose to tail in traffic for up to almost an hour. Then you have the problem and expense of parking! I have resorted to travelling by push bike which is great as it only take me 10 minutes and keeps me fit. Get cycling, everyone who lives in the local area!!
cathy cleary

it would be nice but why take all the old and youngs memories away derby council are ruining derby not making it better
natasha

Just a quick question although the mono rail sounds like an excerlennt idea where would they build the cars for this system? I would only give my support for this idea if they built the cars in derby but knowing our council they will go for the cheap idea and go to china!
Alan webb

I just can't put up with the hassle and expense of owning a car, but Derby seems to have little interest in public transport, which is being pushed out of the centre. Is this no more than news grabbing gimmick? And much better use could be made of the train service from the north and east at least.
Jed Bland

Derby is so badly served by buses - some areas have loads and other have very few. Look at other cities where it works and is reasonably priced.
Jason

why not just merge derby and nottingham into derbingham? no, thought not. we want to be one better than nottingham, thats why. still a good idea though.
James

Without doubt, Derby should have a sophisticated transport scheme, but monorails have a very long life, so any scheme should be designed with traffic requirements in 50 years time considered and not follow the typical 'cheap' attitude of 'just enough' for the day and then spend years trying to rectify the inevitable problems which are sudden apparant the day after the systems come into service. I hope the £160K will be well spent and not simply funding fact finding? 'junkets'.
Alan Goldingay

While I think the monorail would be a fantastic idea and a great addition to Derby, I don't think it is the best way of improving conjestion. The council want to encourage more people to use public transport but still insist on constantly raising bus prices! Even with high petrol prices, it is often much cheaper to travel by car than to use the bus services at least twice a day. Before looking to spend alot of money on people to think about how to make improvements, invest money in the public transport we already have and lower bus prices!
James H

I suggested this months ago in a letter to the DET. I'm glad to see I'm not alone with the idea. Let's hope it goes ahead as soon as possible, it may even create work for the Derby rail industry. It would also be a step closer to the council's goal of Derby being a top ten city.
phil butt

Why not introduce the tram and link it up with the one in Nottingham? Manchester are in the process of doing that with their tram system aqend it's been very popular. Sheffield also has a large area covered by the tram system and it works a treat. And as for waiting in shelters trembling with cold, i've used the manchester and sheffield ones and can say i've honestly never had to wait more than a few minutes. Better than buses!!
Emma Dunstan

Can they call the mono rail system something other than that because the word 'mono' sounds very dull just like Derby itself.
Simon Needler

Lets hope that the monorail goes straight through QUAD. At least it would have a use then!
Jo Hardy

i think its a simply delightful idea. I regularly make trips to Derby, although being slightly over weight I find the trek a challenge. What with the traffic as well I must agree that this is an exciting venture. My wife Alice agrees
Neil Roberts

What a brilliant idea the monorail system, why wait 15 years, get it in now it would enhance the city no end
Joanne Shaw

The council want to get more people on buses ? they could try and get Trent to reduce the prices between Belper and Derby for a start. The £5-before-9am return price is extortionate for commuters ! £100 quid a month just to get into town to work is just not affordable.
Darren Holden

In keeping with most of the new developments in Derby at the moment, the City Council will probably only give the go-ahead if one of the carriages has an alcohol licence.
Rich Hawksworth

I couldn't agree more with Micky Sheehan. What on earth is going on here? When will councils and governments learn that we do not under any circumstances want to be tempted out of our cars. We don't want to spend our winter mornings waiting in rain drenched, wind swept "shelters" waiting for some public hell wagon to take us to somewhere no where near our destination. I consider it an outrage that we get charged parking fees, road tax, road tolls and criminal petrol tax...only for it to be put into a bus service with a handful of glum people sitting on board wondering why they're not wafting along in a climate controlled car with heated seats. And now a monorail? Am I the only one who is reminded of that episode of the Simpsons??!! I'd like to see a precisely itemised breakdown of where that £160,000 is going. Spend it on a few more car parks like park safe at Bold Lane. There's something Derby people can be proud of.
Craig Laws

If the idea of a monorail is possible, why waste money doing something temporary,go for it now!
Karon Fox.

Sounds like a great idea, the sooner the better i say. Anyhthing that improves Derby city is definitely worth investing in.
Si

What a Brilliant idea, let Derby have it, We are the Centre for Railway technology here and yet we don't have anything to show for it, this would secure jobs at the factories, assuming it was awarded to DErby for it to be built, imagine how proud we could be then, to say it was built in Derby and the first of it kind. We are well behind other cities like Nottingham and Sheffield, we are having millions of pounds of new stores, pubs, clubs, cimema, appartments and even the shopping mall is being extended big time, this would be the icing on the cake, get it done now ! Mike in S.Derbys
Mike

Quite a lot of the traffic congestion in Derby is caused by inadequate road layouts. I used tobe a Traffic Policeman in Derby for many years and I have seen the problems escalate. There are several ways that better use of the existing roads systems could be used, for example :- King Street, outward bound, there are always delays at peak times backing up into the inner ring road. I did a study before I retired and found the main problem was the fact that two lane converge into one at St Helens St and also the pedestrian lights at Garden st corner. If those lights could be rephased or better still done away with trafficflow would improve. The other way would be to make St Helens St one way and take the nearside lane traffic down St Helens St and back onto Garden st that way thus relieving the merging pressure. Put traffic Signals at the Junction With St Helens St, to facilitate a Right Turn for users wishing to get to properties in that Street to save them going miles outof their way. I do think a Mono rail would be a Good thing but with space at a premium is there room for it? Bus lanes are a great idea but ou roads unfortunatly are not blessed with enough space in most area's. Traffic has somehow got to be made to run easier and we have got to make public transport far cheaper than it is now. Derby City Centre and its close proximity has been allowed over many years to be built up so that any futur road systems i,e bus Lanes cannot be implemented because the road width is not available to take them.
Mr D Lancashire

They should speak to Lyle Lanley. He's introduced Mono-rail systems to Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook. I think some kind of Transporter technology sounds good too. I'm quite prepared to waste tax payers money on the Councils behalf to look at whether this will be possible!
Andy O'

So Mick you mean leave derby alone.. so we'd still be back in the ice age.. we'd still be using horse and carts if people like you had your way! Derby needs to move forward! not backwards like the people that want derby to stay out of date!
Adam

I great idea but it will take 50 years. Don't forget Mable with the tarten shopping trolley who uses this City once every other Tuesday..She won't like it so the protest vote will once again get get behind her and get in the way of progress. Afterall what are they going to do when they have knocked down the bus station and have nowehere to put their protest banners? In response to Micky..DERBY is a laughing stock even for places like Burton...stop thinking square wheel.. All that is new is not bad. All that is old is not good! Don't forget, if we can keep Derby people in Derby then they will not get in their polution creating cars and journey down Brian Clough Way to that other place. That place miles ahead of us. The tram system they have have completely transformed the place...OH yes built in the downtrodden grubby, backward thinking market town called DERBY. City! It tries to be but it should have given the City charter back years ago. It has never cut the mustard. Only when the Eagle Centre extension, Riverlights, Quad, and the rest of Cityscape is complete can we think of ourselves as a City. We are starting to get there, but on square wheels.
Phil - Derby

Fantastic idea. The scheme should be supported, it can only be good for the city.
Marcus, Leicester

Monorail is an excellent idea if it is affordable. Public transport is extremely expensive, it is far cheaper for us as a family of four to pay the car park fees (also taking into account diesel costs) than to catch the bus!! Not to mention the car is air conditioned and comfortable to travel in whereas public transport is over-crowded, stuffy (sometimes smelly) and not at all comfortable. And what about our shopping? It's hell trying to get on a bus with a couple of bags, nevermind five or six bags and the children! It's these issues about public transport that the council has to address if they want to reduce cars in the city.
River Hardwick

Derby has survived many years without a monorail. I say bring back the trams for a realistic solution to the congestion. A monorail would soon become out-dated and destroy the unique architecture of the city centre. We don't want Derby to become a car park but do we really want to have an 'Alton Towers' style car park monorail twisting it's way through the heart of the city?
Kevin Landells

I've been badgering them for this to be put on their radar for years! About flippin' time
Sam Vimes, Derby

Derby is way too small for a mono-rail system. Where on earth would they put it?!
Tom

yes. especially providing a link between the railway statoin and the cockpit carpark. they both have ready made levels at which to get on and off. maybe run it along the edge of bass's recreation ground. that should get them complaining. get it done asap i say
howard danby

Is this the same council that has just closed off half the road out side The Dolphin with parking spaces that I found out this morning as I nearly staved into a parked car? Is this the same council thats halved all the roads into and out of the city CAUSING a gridlock? Mono rail? £160,000 to pay for "staff" to sort it out?!!!!! Jesus tapdancing christ, why don't they stop medling with things and LEAVE DERBY ALONE!
Micky Sheehan

Sounds like a first class idea provided the economics are thought through carefully.
Ian from Normanton
