Born on Christmas Eve 1972, Marc Edworthy is one of those versatile players who's comfortable as a defensive midfielder or at full-back. He was a regular for Norwich City in their 2004/5 Premiership campaign. BBC Radio Derby's Charles Collins caught up with him - use the link on the right to hear the full interview. When did you realise you wanted to be a professional footballer? I think it's every schoolboy's dream, really. You kick a ball round in the garden - I don't think anybody really expects it to happen - playing into the garden then going on to schoolboy level and, luckily enough for me, I got spotted by a scout and decided it was going to be a bit serious from then on. Which Clubs have you been through in your career? I first started at Plymouth - when I left school I joined them as a YTS. From there I moved on to Crystal Palace, then to Coventry, Wolves, Norwich and ended up here at Derby County. And, apart from Derby, which of the others did you enjoy? I had a fantastic time at Crystal Palace. We played in two play-off finals at Wembley, which was a fantastic highlight of my career, playing at the Twin Towers and then in the Premier League. But also, winning the Championship at Norwich was a great time for me - so I really haven't got a favourite club. I've had some fantastic times at all my clubs. And obviously Plymouth was important to me because that's where I started my career. What do you do to relax? I try to relax as much as I can but I have two boys so they take up a lot of my energy. After training, I go home and spend a lot of time with my family - but also golf and swimming. They've now moved up (to the East Midlands) and my wife is now expecting our third child - which I can tell you, on the record, will be our last! What else do you like to do? I like going to the movies and eating. I am a bit of a movie buff so I like to get to see the latest things on at the cinema or on DVD. And what kind of music do you like to listen to in the car? I'd like to say I can play my own music but most of the time it's children's songs to keep the kids happy! But I like all sorts of music ranging from R'n'B to dance and soul. Do you see your future in football? Yes, and I'd like to give something back if I can. A lot of ex-players are going into the coaching role but there isn't enough room for all of us. I'll get into it if I can but, if not, I have my own housing business down in Devon, so I'm keeping my options open for when I finally hang my boots up. I'll play for as long as I can. I'm enjoying my football at the moment and long may that continue. I'll finally decide what to do when it comes closer. |
