White Town aka Jyoti Mishra
White Town aka Jyoti Mishra

The White Town revival starts here!

More than eight years after Jyoti Mishra put Derby on the pop map with his number one hit 'Your Woman', the single could be about to make its chart return.

The biggest hit ever recorded by a Derby artist could be about to return to the charts - more than eight years after the original hit number one.

Jazz/pop singer Tyler James has revealed his new single is a cover version of 'Your Woman' by White Town, aka Derby-based singer/songwriter Jyoti Mishra.

The quirky single was recorded on a tiny budget by Jyoti and went straight to number one in January 1997 on the back of big support from Radio 1 indie champions Mark Radcliffe and Marc 'Lard' Riley.

Its main hook was a sample of a 1932 track called 'My Woman' by Lew Stone and the Monseigneur Band - something Tyler has retained in his version.

The video for the original was shot around Derby city centre and featured the large stone ram on East Street. Tyler's video is filmed in Lincoln.

Tyler James said: "I loved it when I was growing up. It was out when I was about eleven or twelve and it’s a song that’s always stayed with me.

"I’ve always loved the sample. I did try adapting the lyrics but decided in the end to stick with the original. It’s just got something about it."

Jyoti Mishra said: "I haven’t heard the cover yet but I’m immensely flattered that he’s chosen to cover one of my songs. I look forward to hearing him sing 'so much for all your highbrow, Marxist ways!'

"I guess this means I’ll get another slew of puzzled emails asking whether I’m gay / a woman / a commie / a gay, commie woman!"

Jyoti says he was trying to create something a little bit different when he wrote the song.

He said: "When I wrote it, I was trying to write a pop song that had more than one perspective. Although it’s written in the first person the character behind that viewpoint isn’t necessarily what the casual listener would expect."

The single went gold and was followed by an album 'Women in Technology' which sold 45,000 copies in the UK and an impressive 450,000 in the US.

But Jyoti quit label EMI shortly afterwards and has since used the cash he made to continue making music free from commercial restraints.

After a short spell living in Norwich, Jyoti now lives in Derby once again. He can often be seen Djing around the city centre and supporting the local music scene.

He is also close to completing a new album and hopes to play some live dates in the future.

He said: "I want to play live but I currently have no live incarnation.

"Plus how do I do it? Watching a fat bloke prod a synth and peer at a laptop isn’t exactly high drama, is it?

"I have plans this year to play live again so watch this space!"

Does tyler james have a fan club? He's a little bit too gorgeous!

'Your woman' is the coolest track I've heard in a decade. A work of genius. I have the CD and play it often. Every time I hear it I get that original shiver down my spine when I heard it first . Old Crustie aged 57 Ex-Firefighter (London Fire Brigade)

i love the original, it's part of derby's history...like when the wedding present played here. i formed a wedding present cover band and it's still going strong. Jyotes has been a major influence on the derby scene....just have a look at the wealth of talent we've had....beekeepers, scribble and more recently light seeks light....keep up the good work!

Haven't heard the stale old "sell out" moan in a while. If someone wants to cover his work, why shouldn't he let them? If I had a number one, I would squeeze every penny out of it - thats pop music after all...
Indy Schmindy

I have just been sent the Island Record sampler with this on. I am gutted.
Micky Sheehan

Never mind the covers..rerelease the orignal!

Sell out. Jyoti calls himself a marxist and values his self principles as a winger. This is a blatent atempt to squeeze every last drop of money from the industry he so preclaims should be "Indie" and subversive. Dissapointed. Puts Derby's new hopes down for sure.

Jyoti - if the Leon boys won't help you out for the live stuff - I'd be happy to help. Post up on here and we'll work something out.
David, Derby
