"Students, your task is to come up with an imaginative way of promoting Chesterfield College's @SPIRE2 restaurant." Lecturer Viv Cockram may have got more than she bargained for when she challenged a class of AVCE Marketing and Promotional Strategy learners to 'use their imagination' for a project. Students John Barnston, Jonny Orwin, Andy Ward, Rob Mitchell and Jonathan Watson, all 17, decided that the allure of their own rippling bodies would be just thing to attract diners to the South Block Bistro, and came up with a startling concept for a promotional photograph. Viv said: "The whole process of choosing the best strategy was very democratic with groups of students presenting their ideas to the class and then voting for the one they all felt was the most appropriate." So what went wrong? Jonny Orwin came up with the original idea. He said: "We had to think of a theme, an idea. "To start with, I was just messing around. I was joking when I suggested we should take our shirts off but the more we laughed about it, the more we thought it might be fun to put the idea forward - and Rob agreed with me." Their idea was soon voted the best by their classmates and things started to move forward. Jonny added: "I really didn't think it was going to happen - then it started and I couldn't believe it!" Most of the lads admitted to feeling a little nervous about the whole thing. "I was a little anxious," said 17-year-old Andy Ward. "It was quite a laugh in the end. I guess I enjoyed it in a way - though I might do a bit more working out before I do it again and I certainly wouldn't take anything else off!"

But the one thing that has surprised all of them is how supportive everyone has been about the project and their new-found fame and for Jonathan Watson that came as something of a relief: "I wondered what I'd done at first. But the pictures have had an interesting response and most people have been really good about it. "I'm not sure if it will help me in my studies - but it will certainly get us on the map!" The project has certainly raised the boys' profile - as well as a few eyebrows - and not just with their fellow students. Local papers have printed the photo and Andy Ward says he's almost become a celebrity in his hometown of Bakewell: "It's gone up in the staff room in the place I work and a friend of mine has threatened to put it up in the pub where he works."
