FACTS

The 30th of August is also Amnesty International's Day of the Disappeared.

The original online novel was written for the Internet about the London tube. It's called 253 and it's by Geoff Ryman (see above link).

If you're interested in writing you should make a date with Wild Thyme's Saturday or Sunday Scribbles. As well as being mad about words these lot are crazy about food and they know how to party. Check their website for photos of their alternative Burn's night!

They say that everyone's got a novel in them. Well, here's your chance to launch your literary career and the good thing is you don't have to do it on your own.

We're going to attempt to write a novel between the hours of 9 and 5pm on Friday 30th August 2002 and we want as many of you to get involved as possible.

The inspiration...

August 30th would be Mary Shelley's birthday. If she were alive today she'd be
celebrating her 205th year.

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1818 when she was barely 21 years old. It became a best-seller, and the story is known even to those who have not read the novel.

In the spirit of Ms Shelley we want to bring life to our own literary monster. A virtual brainchild that's patched together with different personalities, identities and psyches.

You'll be the creators of a truly scientific experiment which will find a life of its own and hopefully emulate Shelley's Frankenstein where creature and maker, mutually dependent but antagonistic, engage in a chase to the death?

The theme...

Quite naturally it's going to be a thriller but that's as much as we're prepared to say, it's your baby after all.

Derbyshire writing group, Wild Thyme Writers, are going to start us off with the first 50 words and then it's up to you.

Alyson Koe from Wild Thyme said: "We think it would be a great idea to write an online novel and to do it in a day would be a really exciting adventure."

The finished story will appear in a Wild Thyme publication due out in September and of course it will stay right here on the BBC Website for Derbyshire too.

The rules...

When you see a new entry quickly tap your words into the form provided and press the send button straight away.

Don't try to jump the gun. Each entry must follow on from the one before.

Each entry must be in the region of 50 words. We don't want to be too prescriptive so a few over or under is fine.

Obviously we need to wrap the whole thing up by 5pm. So set your alarm clocks for 4pm and start thinking about the end.

Talking of the end...

We'll publish a variety of conclusions at 5pm and ask you to choose which one should be the official resolution.

Whoever's voted as the final contributor will win a fantastic prize. In the spirit of mystery and thrills we're going to keep the prize a secret until later.

So...make a date in your diary, bookmark this page, and start formulating your most hair-raising and spine-chilling ideas.

If you'd like to get more involved in writing why not get join one of the Wild Thyme workshops? More information can be found here.
