FACTS

Spondon's population trebled during the 19th century.

'The Homestead' a magnificent 18th century house, is one of Derby's grade 1 listed buildings.

St. Werburgh's Church was burnt down in the fire of 1340, rebuilt then restored in 1826 and again in 1891.

It took 50 years to rebuild Spondon after the fire in 1340.

One of Spondon's most famous sons was the cricketing great, George Porter.

    tiny Spondon is a 2000 year old village, dating back to Anglo Saxon times.

The name Spondon comes from the old English 'Spon' meaning chip, shaving or shingle and 'Dun' meaning hill.

In 1968 Spondon was absorbed into the city of Derby, although many residents still regard Spondon as a village.

A Roman road runs within a mile of the village and leads to Leicester about thirty miles away.

Saint Werburgh's Church is probably Spondon's most prominent landmark, dating from the 14th Century the church stands 114 feet high.

In 1340 the church and half of the village were destroyed by a fire that started in the malthouse, causing a thousand pounds damage.

In 1803 a company of 140 volunteers was formed in Spondon, to join the Sherwood Forresters regiment in the war against Napoleon.

Spondon certainly does retain its "village feel". The Village Improvement Committee (part of Spondon Community Association) is building on that and is holding a series of events to "Kick off Christmas in Spondon" - see our website (link is on left side of this page)
