Ilkeston Market Place

Ilkeston is one of Derbyshire's biggest towns.

It has a busy town centre and market place.

Cricket is played at the Rutland Recreation Ground, so called, because the Dukes of Rutland once owned much of the land here

The Charter fair, first started over 700 years ago.

The town was featured in the BBC television series Playing the Field.

Ilkeston is the birthplace of actor Robert Lindsay.

Ilkeston is in the Erewash valley in Derbyshire, close to the border with Nottinghamshire.

Until recent years Ilkeston was a mining town and also had a prosperous iron industry.

Ilkeston is the third largest town in Derbyshire. Ilkeston was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Tilchestune.

You can learn about Ilkeston’s industrial past at the Erewash Museum on the High Street.

Ilkeston has a weekly market on Thursday and Friday plus an annual three day charter fair, which is believed to be one of the largest street fairs in the country.

St. Mary’s Church dates from about the year 1200. There is an effigy in the church of a knight, presumed to be Nicholas de Cantelupe.

The Cantelupes were lords of the manor in 13th Century.

The American Adventure theme park is located just outside Ilkeston.
