| FACTS |
 |
Beeley
grit was famous for being particularly hard and was used to
make grindstones.
This
area was heavily populated in the Bronze Age and the moor is
dotted with hut circles and tumuli, the most celebrated of which
is Hob Hurst's House - an unusual square tumulus which is a
scheduled national monument.
There
is a bronze age barrow on Beeley Moor, which rises 1200 feet
above the village.
The parish register dates back to 1538.
In
1785, one lady died on her way to be married AT St. Anne's Chuch! |

Beeley
lies at the southern edge of the Peak District National Park.
There is no village Post Office or shop, although a new village shop
and tea room is due to open within the next few weeks.
The village has a pub, unsurprisingly called the Devonshire Arms,
the village being one of Chatsworth’s estate villages.
Beeley Old Hall dates from the 17th century and is situated at the
north eastern edge of the village.
The church of St. Anne's was renovated in the 19th Century but still
retains a Norman doorway, a 14th century tower and contains memorials
to the Cavendish family.
There is a school and outward bound centre for deaf children in the
village.
The school used to be The Duke's Barn, built in 1791, and once housed
the cart horses which provided transport for the Chatsworth estate.
