Success of 'World's biggest Burns supper' celebrated by MSPs

SNP MSP Joan McAlpine congratulated the people of Dumfries for their "collective community achievement" in making the annual Big Burns Supper festival the success it has become, during a member's debate on 22 January 2014.

Billed as the world's biggest Burn's Night celebration, the event is now in its third year.

Taking place between the 24th and 26th of January, there is a varied programme including theatre, music, comedy and a street carnival.

Ms McAlpine also pointed to the valuable contribution Scotland's national bard Robert Burns has made to both the "future of our culture as well as past".

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop described Burns as "one of our most important cultural sons" with "the messages and observations in Burns' poetry and songs as relevant and as heartfelt today as they were 250 years ago."

Ms Hyslop also praised the festival for taking "a fresh and innovative look at what Burns Night is about".
