Public Petitions Committee 2

Help

The Public Petitions Committee took evidence on a petition from the Throat Cancer Foundation calling for the extension of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to include boys on 11 June 2013.

HPV is a highly contagious virus which lives on the skin.

There are well over a hundred strains of HPV which are transferred from person to person by skin to skin contact.

Petition PE1477 by Jamie Rae argues for a gender neutral HPV vaccination.

Currently the vaccine is offered to girls so Mr Rae asked why only a certain sector of society was being protected and said it was an equality issue for all men.

The petition was continued and it was agreed further evidence should be sought from the Scottish government, Health Protection Scotland, Cancer Research UK, the Scottish Cancer Coalition and Stonewall UK.
