Members debate: the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse

SNP MSP Aileen McLeod led a member's debate entitled History is Made at the Mull of Galloway on Wednesday 15 May 2013.

She highlighted the result of the ballot of Kirkmaiden residents on a community buyout of the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse.

Ms McLeod said more than 98% were in favour of plans to operate this "iconic" landmark on the most southerly point in Scotland as a visitor attraction.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse responded to the debate by saying this was a "highly significant" buyout which would create a tourist complex and it would make an economic contribution to this remote rural community, in particular he said 20 jobs being created would make a huge difference.

He said the community buyout would make a "real and long lasting difference" to this remote community and "the people of Kirkmaiden have a lot to look forward to."
