Scotland's canals statement

Transport Minister Keith Brown revealed the details of the government's policy for Scotland's canals in a ministerial statement on 24 April 2013.

Mr Brown said Scotland's canals could play an important role by helping to stimulate economic development for some of the country's most populous communities.

In July 2012 it was announced that the body which runs canals and waterways in Scotland was to have a name change but would continue to be publicly owned.

British Waterways in England and Wales moved out of the public sector to a new charitable trust, but in Scotland it is known as Scottish Canals and Scottish government ministers are in charge.
