Welcome to the national cricket teams of Japan debate

Conservative MSP Alex Johnstone led a member's debate to welcome the national cricket teams of Japan on 23 April 2013.

The national men and women's Japan cricket teams will arrive in Scotland on 30 April 2013 to play in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling before visiting the Parliament on 4 May.

In his motion Mr Johnstone said that the head of the Japan Cricket Association, Alex Miyaji, had done important work in promoting cricket in Japan and congratulated the work of his charity, Cricket For Smiles, which supplies cricket equipment and instruction to areas that were devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

He also talked about the positive economic, sporting, cultural and educational relationship that Scotland had enjoyed with Japan for many years, including 65 Japanese companies operating in Scotland employing some 5,000 people.

He concluded by saying he wished the teams an eventful and enjoyable stay in Scotland.

Sport Minister Shona Robison said she was "very pleased we have a long and positive relationship with Japan".
