Vote to exclude Gerry Kelly lacks cross-community support

A majority of MLAs voted to suspend the Sinn Fein Assembly MLA Gerry Kelly for five days, but the vote failed to receive cross-community support, on 17 June 2014.

A majority backed a proposal by the Standards and Privileges Committee, but the move was blocked after Sinn Fein and SDLP members signed a petition of concern prior to the initial debate.

The committee suggested the suspension in response to a finding that Mr Kelly broke the MLAs' code of conduct in relation to an incident in June 2013 in which he was carried on the front of a police Land Rover in North Belfast.

The DUP's Arlene Foster also presented a public petition against the closure of Collegiate Grammar School, Enniskillen.

She said the school, along with Portora Royal School, faced closure in 2015, but the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA described the plan as "bizarre" as Collegiate was "the most over-subscribed school in any sector in County Fermanagh".

"I, the board of governors of the Collegiate, the parents, pupils and staff of the Collegiate and as this petition shows, the community of Fermanagh reject this bizarre plan by the Western Education and Library Board".
