MLAs pass legislative consent motion on same-sex-marriage
MLAs passed a legislative consent motion concerning the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, on 24 June 2013.
Finance Minister Sammy Wilson explained that this would allow same-sex marriages conducted in England and Wales to be recognised as civil partnerships in Northern Ireland.
Daithi McKay of Sinn Fein, who chairs the Finance and Personnel Committee, said the adoption of this position with regard to same-sex marriage would leave the North "out of kilter" with many other jurisdictions.
He said it was likely that the executive would face legal challenge on human rights or equality grounds.
Speakers for the SDLP and Alliance Party said they would support the legislative consent motion.
The motion passed on an oral vote.
