The Marine Bill completes its final stage

Help

A bill containing provisions for marine planning and marine nature conservation within Northern Ireland's territorial waters passed its final stage in the Assembly, on 21 May 2013.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood said the new legislation represented "a strategic and holistic approach" to the management and protection of marine waters.

Alliance MLA Anna Lo, who chairs the Environment committee, said it was an important piece of legislation as it put Northern Ireland into line with its UK counterparts and went a long way to fulfilling European Union requirements.

She said she was so happy when one of her amendments was passed that she could have kissed her fellow committee member, DUP MLA Simon Hamilton.
