Attwood: Flags may have to be addressed through RPA

The Environment Minister told MLAs the issue of flags and emblems may have to be addressed within the reorganisation of local government, on 4 January 2012.

Alex Attwood was replying to a suggestion from the UUP's Tom Elliott that provision for the union flag to be flown at all new civic centres should be written into the Local Government Bill.

Mr Attwood said it was a "very serious matter" and that the flags issue would only be settled when all parties "uphold the principle of parity of esteem".

He said it "might have to be captured in the work of the RPA (Review of Public Administration)", and that "If that is necessary, I don't think we should shirk from it".

The minister also replied to questions about electoral boundaries, planning and urban blight in tourist areas.

The Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster, addressed topics including fuel poverty, jobs creation and tourism.
