Student visas debate

Peers have taken part in a debate on the impact of the student visa policy on admissions to universities in the UK and Northern Ireland on 31 January 2013.

In 2011, the UK Border Agency began a pilot scheme in which "high-risk student visa applicants" were interviewed rather than undergoing the usual paper-based checks.

Home Secretary Theresa May said that from April 2013 border staff would question more than 100,000 people to "root out abuse" of the system, while maintaining the UK as a destination for study.
