Environment Secretary Owen Paterson told the Commons on 9 January 2014 that he will chair another meeting of the government's Cobra emergency committee to discuss flooding.

Mr Paterson confirmed that the number of people killed during the recent storms and floods had increased.

He told the MPs that "eight people have lost their lives as a result of the severe weather conditions over the Christmas and New Year period."

The minister said water levels were still rising in many areas and urged members of the public to take heed of warnings issued by the Environment Agency.

Other topics raised during environment questions include the safeguarding of trees and red tape in the farming industry.

MPs then put questions to representatives from the Speaker's Committee on the Electoral Commission, the Church Commissioners and the chair of the Public Accounts Commission.

Topics covered National Voter Registration Day, violent attacks on the clergy and grade one listed church buildings.
