Private rented market 'failing tenants' - MP

Labour MP John Healey has proposed a bill to tighten up regulation of estate agents, accusing the private rented sector of failing tenants.

The Wentworth and Dearne MP introduced his Letting Agents (Competition, Choice and Standards) Bill under the ten minute rule motion on 2 July 2013.

He said the private rented market is "failing too many despairing tenants who feel let down by low standards and ripped off by high fees".

"This sector has been called the property market's Wild West," he said. "It's high time that Parliament bought the rule of law to bear on these cowboys and my bill would do just that."

His bill received an unopposed first reading in the Commons but it is unlikely to become law without government support.
