MP calls for National Commonwealth Military Day

Conservative MP Graham Evans has called for a national day to raise awareness of the military contribution of Commonwealth countries to Britain and the Overseas Territories.

On 12 March 2013, introducing his National Commonwealth Military Day Bill to the Commons, the MP for Weaver Vale said: "I believe that we... need to take more active steps to ensure that we both recognise and reward contributions as we would honour those who were born on these shores.

"It is essential, to better remember how we became the nation we are today, that we must look at the nation we once were.

"That is why I believe we should have a day to commemorate the contribution of Commonwealth countries to British military campaigns."

The bill received an unopposed first reading but is unlikely to make further progress without government support.
