Barroso leads Commission tributes to Thatcher


The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, has paid tribute to Baroness Thatcher, describing her as a "great stateswoman".

In a statement in Brussels on 8 April 2013, he highlighted the work of the former British prime minister in bringing an end to the Cold War and welcomed her support for the enlargement of the EU to countries of the former Eastern Bloc.

Mr Barroso also noted her strong support for the 1986 Single European Act which paved the way for a full internal market in the EU.

Baroness Thatcher died at the age of 87, following a stroke.
