The EU - a view from the inside
The Labour MEP, Mary Honeyball, presents an insider's guide to the UK's relations with the EU, and warns against government plans for a referendum on EU membership.
Speaking as part of the Open Lecture series organised by the UK Parliament on 19 March 2013, the London MEP said there was a lack of understanding of the benefits of EU membership.
She said that the opening of borders and the free movement of trade led to an economic boost that could not be achieved if the UK was outside the union.
And she rejected suggestions that the EU was working towards ever closer political integration, saying that with 27 - soon to be 28 - member states this would not be possible.
