Although 20 year old Rana Roy was born in London, she moved to Dubai when she was one with her mother Shahenaz and father Roy. She lived there until she was six and her parents divorced.

Rana then moved with her mum to America but returned to Dubai six months later to be with her father because she didn't see eye to eye with her mother. The following year her father married again. Although Rana's still in touch with her mother, her mother's family are Muslim and don't approve of Rana's ambitions to become a dancer.

Rana's father is a hugely successful business man. By her own admission, Rana's lifestyle in Dubai was incredibly privileged and she says she was 'a spoilt brat'. It wasn't unusual for Rana to have a maid and a driver.

When Rana was nine, her stepmother, who is herself a dancer, enrolled Rana in dance classes in Dubai. At 16, Rana moved to London by herself to go to dance college. She graduated ten months ago and her father has since bought her a flat in Marylebone, where she lives with her boyfriend Paul.

At one point Rana was considering moving back to Dubai: "On paper my life looks fantastic but inside something is missing and I want more than anything to succeed and make dad proud."

It's difficult to notice anyone else when she's on the stage because of the way she moves. It is so different from what you'd expect -- Rana is completely comfortable with her body and rhythm/movement -- that kind of confidence is compelling to the viewer... and can't be faked. I think Rana has already made a break through to fame with her distinctive name and compelling stage presence -- and I wish her all the best.
